I've been copywriting for a number of companies in the telecommunications and cloud service provider industries over the last couple of years, and edge computing is a hot topic.
The idea of edge computing is that data centres are located much closer to the user, so that data doesn't have to travel so far across the network. It dramatically cuts latency, and enables new use cases such as augmented reality, computer vision, and safety-critical artificial intelligence applications.
Edge computing is widely seen as essential to unlock the full potential of 5G. This new generation of mobile communications dramatically increases the bandwidth and cuts the latency over the air. As a result, the backhaul to the cloud risks becoming the new bottleneck. Processing data at the edge of the network enables applications to be more responsive, and cuts the cost of sending huge volumes of data to the cloud.
I recently wrote an ebook about edge computing: The Gorilla Guide (Foundation Edition): Edge Computing in 2021. The guide defines edge computing, outlines what's driving it in 2021, and discusses the risks and challenges of edge computing.
