My latest Raspberry Pi project is called Raspberry Radio. It turns your Raspberry Pi into a virtual DJ, which announces your songs before it plays them and reads out the news and weather report. I've written a two-part series about it for The MagPi, and part one is out now.
In the first article, you'll see how to download the news headlines (and indeed any content that is syndicated in RSS format). The article also shows how to download the weather from OpenWeatherMap. The code is packaged in a function called rr_newsreader.py, which you can easily import into other projects. As a demonstration, the article shows how to display the headlines on a Pimoroni Display-O-Tron HAT using a simple animation. The animation unfolds the news one character at a time, which makes it look like the news is breaking right now.
Like my previous project ArtEvolver, this one has a low barrier to entry and provides lots of opportunities for customisation.
Download the rr_newsreader.py code and the example programs here.
You can buy The MagPi in your local newsagent, subscribe or download the PDF.
